New Photos Nikon Camera NIKON D700 FX-FORMAT D-SLR CAMERA

THE AGILE NEW NIKON D700 FX-FORMAT D-SLR CAMERA DELIVERS PERFORMANCE INSPIRED BY THE NIKON D3 IN A SMALLER, LIGHTER DESIGN
Nikon’s Second FX-Format Camera Delivers Peak Pro Performance in a Versatile Form-Factor
MELVILLE, N.Y. (July 1, 2008) – Nikon, Inc. today introduced the new D700 digital SLR camera featuring a 12.1-effective megapixel Nikon FX-format sensor that measures 23.9 x 36mm, which is nearly identical to the size of 35mm film. Benefiting from Nikon’s legacy of imaging technology innovation, the D700 offers both advanced and professional photographers stunning image quality, accurate color reproduction and revolutionary low light performance.
Building on the immense success of the Nikon D3 professional D-SLR camera, the D700 offers pro-level performance and an extensive array of features and innovations in a comfortably nimble platform. In addition to the Nikon-original FX-format CMOS sensor, the D700 incorporates Nikon's EXPEED Image Processing System, Nikon’s renowned 51-point auto focus system with 3D Focus Tracking and two Live View shooting modes that allow photographers to frame a shot using the camera's three-inch high-resolution LCD monitor. The D700 also features Nikon’s sophisticated Scene Recognition System and a new active dust reduction system.
Nikon’s flagship FX and DX-format cameras, the D3 and D300 respectively, established new benchmarks for digital image quality, speed, and unmatched ISO performance. The D700 maintains this new measure with exceptional overall image quality, broad tonal range and depth, and extremely low noise throughout its native ISO range of 200 to 6400.
“Nikon FX-format cameras have teamed with our strong lineup of DX-format models to offer photographers unprecedented advancements in performance and versatility along with the freedom to choose the format that best serves their needs. Today’s introduction of the D700 offers an important new option to photographers who need the overall performance and imaging perspective Nikon FX-format cameras offer,” said Edward Fasano, general manager for marketing, SLR System Products at Nikon, Inc. “Nikon has developed a host of innovative technologies such as the Scene Recognition System and Picture Control, incorporating them into both FX and DX-format digital SLRs to ensure that photographers can leverage the advantages of both formats seamlessly, and achieve the end-results that best fulfill their photographic vision.”
The legendary Nikon FX-Format CMOS sensor
The D700’s 12.1-megapixel FX-format CMOS image sensor provides exceptional image quality throughout its remarkable ISO sensitivity range. A large pixel size of 8.45 µm allows for an extremely low signal-to-noise ratio and a wide dynamic range. The 12-channel readout enables accelerated information transfer, allowing the D700 to shoot at speeds of up to eight frames per second at full resolution (using the optional MB-D10 Multi Power Battery Pack) and quickly write image data onto the CompactFlash™ card.
The D700 offers a versatile base ISO range from 200-6400 but can be expanded to range from ISO 100 (Lo-1) to 25,600 (Hi-2) affording photographers the new-found confidence to shoot in the widest variety of lighting conditions from the brightest midday sun to dim interiors. Images previously thought to be impossible to create without complex lighting set-ups or lengthy post-processing are now captured easily and faithfully with the D700, unleashing new and diverse shooting possibilities.
Also new to the D700 is Nikon’s first self-cleaning system designed for the FX-format sensor. Utilizing four distinct vibration frequencies, the D700 frees image degrading dust particles from the sensor’s optical low-pass filter at start-up, shut-down or on demand. As an added benefit, the mirror box and entire shutter mechanism are constructed of materials that resist creating debris that can affect image purity.
Fastest speed and autofocus in its class
The D700 starts up in a mere 0.12 seconds and has a nearly imperceptible shutter-lag response time of 0.40 milliseconds, making this an extraordinarily responsive tool for the demanding photographer. The D700 can record full-resolution JPEG images at an astounding five frames per second (fps), or eight fps with the optional MB-D10 battery pack for up to 100 images, or up to 17 lossless 14-bit Nikon NEF (RAW) files. To write images efficiently, the Nikon D700 is also compliant with the next-generation of high-speed UDMA CompactFlash™ cards that will enable recording speeds up to 35 megabytes/second.
The D700 offers one of the fastest and most accurate advanced AF systems on the market today. Nikon’s Multi-CAM 3500FX autofocus sensor module features 51 AF points and the ability to use 3D tracking to focus and lock-on a moving subject. The 15 cross-type sensors and 36 horizontal sensors can be used individually or in groups, with the option for Single Area AF mode and Dynamic AF modes using groups of either 9, 21 or all 51 focus points. The system also features 3D Focus Tracking with automatic focus point switching that takes advantage of all 51 AF points as it uses scene color content and light information to accurately track the subject.
Intelligent features for sophisticated performance
The D700 relies on a wealth of innovative Nikon technologies to help photographers create superb images. Nikon’s Scene Recognition System analyzes information from the 1,005-pixel RGB light sensor for use in auto exposure, auto white balance and autofocus calculations. The Scene Recognition System also assists autofocus by tracking subject position and automatically shifts the AF points used to match the subject’s movement within the frame. This system also contributes to higher accuracy of auto exposure and auto white balance detection, resulting in sharp landscapes, flattering portraits and engaging action shots.
Photographers also have the option to enhance their pictures during or after capture with the Picture Control System and Active D-Lighting. Nikon’s Picture Control System enables users to adjust their images to pre-set parameters such as Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome that apply tweaks to image sharpening, tone compensation, brightness, overall tone and saturation. D-Lighting uses localized tone control technology to further optimize highlight and shadow detail while also maintaining natural contrast, giving photographers the ability to capture more perfectly exposed images, even in unusual lighting conditions. Active D-Lighting lets photographers choose from various intensities during capture, while a new Automatic mode also applies varying levels of D-Lighting as, and when needed, to enhance photos while shooting.
Enhanced Live View modes and viewfinder
Ideal for studio, remote applications and more, Nikon’s Live View allows the photographer to compose the subject on the bright three-inch, TFT LCD monitor. In Handheld mode, the user is able to recompose the frame prior to actual shooting; familiar TTL phase-detection AF is activated, using all 51 AF points. Tripod mode is designed for precise focus accuracy with still subjects and tripod stabilization. It enables focal-plane contrast-detect AF on a desired point within a specific area. Remote view, focusing and shooting can also be controlled from a PC (via connection or wireless) using the optional Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 software. Additionally, the Virtual Horizon feature on the D700 can now be superimposed over the Live View monitor image to aid composition.
While using Live View to compose or review images and settings, users will appreciate the ultra-high resolution 920,000-dot VGA, three-inch TFT LCD monitor with tempered glass that provides a wide 170-degree viewing angle. The large monitor is remarkably effective when confirming the focus with enlarged playback images. The camera also outputs a video signal to an HD television using the new smaller HDMI-C standard, which is an excellent solution for workshop demonstrations or shooting tethered for clients.
Photographers will also be able to compose images easily using the wide and bright viewfinder that features an eye-level pentaprism with high refraction index and provides a 95 percent frame coverage with 0.72x magnification. Each of the 51 AF points, as well as a framing grid, can also be superimposed on the finder screen to suit the photographer’s personal preferences.
Rugged construction and durability
High-strength magnesium alloy is used for the construction of the camera body, rear body and mirror box to create a precision platform, reduce weight and provide rugged durability. The camera is tested to stand up to the rigors of the globetrotting photographer and is weather sealed using precision O-rings where connections are made to effectively combat dust and moisture.
The shutter unit employs an assembly made of a new composite carbon fiber and Kevlar hybrid material. Tested on fully assembled cameras, the D700’s shutter unit has been proven through 150,000 cycles under demanding conditions. The self-diagnostic shutter constantly monitors and maintains shutter precision to ensure peak performance.
Price and availability
The new FX-format Nikon D700 D-SLR camera will be available late July 2008, and will have an estimated selling price of $2,999.95 (body only).*

New Flagship Flash from Nikon SB-900 Speddlight

Nikon’s Newest Flagship Speedlight Offers a Powerful Addition to the Versatile Nikon Creative Lighting System

MELVILLE, N.Y. (July 1, 2008) – Nikon, Inc. today introduced the SB-900 Speedlight to provide Nikon digital SLR photographers with a flash capable of a wide zoom range, increased versatility, faster recycling time, and a wealth of intelligent features to enhance the already vast functionality of the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS). Building on the success of the popular SB-800 Speedlight, the SB-900 provides users with extensive creative lighting possibilities with a simplified interface and the ability to stay up to date with future technologies through user-applied firmware updates.*

The SB-900 offers unprecedented zoom range coverage from 17 to 200mm, to increase flexibility in a variety of shooting conditions, while automatically adapting itself to Nikon’s FX or DX-format cameras. Additionally, light output has been increased to a maximum guide number of 48/157.5 (ISO 200, meters/feet at 35mm FX-format and Standard). Photographers can now also select from three light patterns; “Center-weighted” provides the highest guide number and is suitable for images such as portraits, where light falloff at the image edges is of less importance. “Standard” provides a familiar pattern, similar to the SB-800, and is ideal for general photography and “Even” which delivers the most consistent edge-to-edge coverage, making it ideal for situations such as group photography. Additionally, Nikon’s newest flagship Speedlight provides photographers with advanced wireless i-TTL capabilities allowing the utilization of multiple Speedlights with ease and confidence on location or in the studio.

“Nikon is proud that its innovative leadership in flash technologies has been praised by photographers who have realized the versatility and power that the Nikon Creative Lighting System contributes to their photography,” said Edward Fasano, general manager for marketing, SLR System Products at Nikon, Inc. “The SB-900 Speedlight now provides photographers with a new level of portable lighting functionality, with performance and intelligent features that adapt to an even wider scope of lighting challenges.”
The SB-900 Speedlight is engineered to address the creative lighting challenges faced by today’s photographers including a need for fast, on-demand performance, and the ability to adapt seamlessly to nearly any lighting scenario. The SB-900’s innovative design has the Xenon flash tube and reflector system moving independently – allowing for a wider zoom range from an extreme wide angle of 17mm (FX) to the telephoto setting which reaches 200mm without the aid of accessories or as wide as 12mm in DX mode with the built-in wide-angle panel engaged.
The SB-900 offers a quick recycle time of 4.0 seconds (at full power) with four Alkaline AA batteries which drops to a mere 2.3 seconds (at full power) while using four rechargeable NiMH batteries—about 25 percent faster than the SB-800 with its fifth battery attachment.

While ease of use has always been a defining hallmark of the Nikon CLS System, the user interface has been even further refined to simplify control and offer faster operation. Controls for setting the wireless Master and Remote have been relocated to the outside of the unit for easier access and frequently used functions are easily adjusted with a new Rotary Select Dial. A larger LCD screen is easy to read, even in direct sunlight, and photographers can assign “My Menu” hotkeys for quicker access to commonly used functions. A new thermal cut-out protection system monitors conditions when the flash might overheat due to excessive rapid bursts. Helpful operating temperature information is provided to the photographer with an innovative temperature gauge displayed on the LCD screen.
For the first time, Nikon SB-900 Speedlight users will have the ability to take advantage of future performance advancements, by way of user-uploadable firmware. The user will be able to download the firmware onto a flash media card and upload it to the flash through select digital SLR cameras.*
The SB-900 Speedlight is Nikon’s most intelligent Speedlight ever, created in response to the needs of today’s digital photographic professionals. When using the included fluorescent or incandescent filters and adaptor, the flash automatically recognizes what filter is being used and automatically adjusts white balance accordingly on the latest Nikon D-SLRs.* Additionally, the SB-900 aids auto focus with a broader AF assist beam that covers a wide 20-105mm that is matched to all of the D3, D700 and D300’s 51 focus points. The bounce and swivel capability of the SB-900 has been expanded to include: tilt up to 90 degrees, down minus 11 degrees, and a full 180-degree swivel left or right, allowing more creativity for on or off camera use, or as a remote Speedlight.
The SB-900 serves as the new core for the Nikon Creative Lighting System when used in combination with Nikon SLRs, and supports Advanced Wireless Lighting as a master or a remote Speedlight, inviting photographers to discover endless creative possibilities. While using one or more Nikon Speedlights wirelessly, photographers can artistically use shadows, highlight details, and light complicated angles with ease. Along with the SB-900, the Nikon Creative Lighting System features a comprehensive assortment of personal lighting tools that include the agile SB-600 and SB-400, and the remarkable R1 and R1C1 Wireless Close-up Speedlight systems.
Available accessoriesThe SD9 Battery Pack boosts flash recycle time to a mere one second (at full power). For faster recycling or all-day shooting it accepts up to eight AA batteries. To enhance the weatherproof ability of Nikon D-SLRs, optional Water Guards will be available for select cameras to protect the connection between the flash and camera, allowing users to utilize the flash when weather conditions are less than ideal.
Price and availabilityThe new Nikon SB-900 Speedlight is scheduled to be available in August 2008, and will have an estimated selling price of $499.95.** The SB-900 will come packaged with the Speedlight Stand, Bounce Adapter, Color Filter Holder, Intelligent Color Filter Kit, Diffuser Dome and the Soft Case. The SD9 Battery Pack is also scheduled to be available in August 2008 with an estimated selling price of $230.00. About Nikon Nikon, At the Heart of the Image™. It's not normal seeing someone angry at Steve Jobs. Come on, let's accept it, the guy's as hateable as YouTube's sneezing baby panda. Or at least, that's the way it was, until now.

For example, and this comes from Gizmodo, canadians are a tad angry at Jobs, because of Rogers Communications, the only carrier with contract to sell the phone, data plan $75 a month that comes with a mandatory 3-year contract, 100 text messages, 300 weekday minutes, and a 750MB cap on 3G usage. The letter can be found here.

Another example is this one, from a young man from Mexico, or Spain, or England. He has posted this video on YouTube, asking "everyone" to "boicot Apple" by "not buying the iPhone 3g", which, in his own words is "slightly crazy". Up to this moment, the video has received 474 viewings and has 14 comments (it's sad but true: almost every comment in the video has an offensive word in it...) The reasons he gives to boicot Apple's 3G are this ones: The cost to maintain the iPhone would be much too expensive, added to the fact that the iPhone would have to be bought in $30 a month plan, with mandatory 2 year contract ( I haven't confirmed this last thing, though). Oh, and he also let free that part of us that's angry with Bill Gates by saying: "this is something i'd have expected from Microsoft".

Here's the video:

WALL-E Craze

OK, I guess you've all seen WALL-E's trailer: The little robot who continues picking trash long after the human race leaves planet Earth (Disney string section. WALL-E is released Friday, for those of you who don't yet know, thank you.

So I decided I'd feature two WALL-E related things today.

The first one is an NXT based WALL-E. The robot scans the ground looking for litter, then lifts it, and places it in it's belly. The instructions are here. It was created about a year ago, taking inspiration from a leaked WALL-E picture.

The second one is WALL-E. Again. Made from paper. Origam-E if you wish it that way. I know, this is supposed to be a technology blog, not a traditional japanese paper flexing art blog. But look at ORIGAM-E!!!! It's small, it's made of paper, and it is based on a robot from a Disney movie. Can it get any more adorable???? Doesn't it make you want to throw the Swashbot out the window? The piece is made by Brian Chan, who's also made a Robert Downey Jr... sorry, Iron Man, out of paper using origami. You can see his page here.

We hope this whole WALL-E craze is worth it. Although, I have no reason to doubt from a Disney/Pixar movie. Speaking of which, I think Brian Chan should get to work on making an origami Buzz Lightyear.

Halo Wars News Update

This month's Halo Wars news update kinda renewed my decaying hopes on Ensemble's real time strategy game. For one, the Ensemble guys stated that Halo Wars might be present at E3, although they also made some emphasis on E3's "closed doors, just press and buyers" policy. Textually: " So although we’re going to be showing Halo Wars there, you’re likely going to have to live vicariously through second hand accounts from members of the press".

They also disclosed information on the so-called Cyclops. Turns out it's just a version of Starcraft's Terran SCVs resource gathereres, instead of a Human counterpart to the Covenant's "try-to-kill-me!" Scarab tank. Again, textually: "These mechanical suits house a man who operates it, and they would normally be put to work moving around supplies, ammunition, or doing the heavy lifting on construction projects". And I was already planning to do some grunt splattering!

Anyway, I certainly hope that from this point on, information regarding Halo Wars makes more emphasis on Units, weapons, graphics, etc, to turn the heat up, you know?

Crabfu's return: the R/C tortoise!

Okay, so, a few weeks ago, I posted this story about 3 robots made by a guy called Crabfu in the Internet. The videos of this robots were filled with comments, that basically read "awesome..." and "cool..." among other things.

Now Crabfu's back, and he's brought the R/C Tortoise with him. Although it lacks the personality Swashbot 1 had, I think it's worth seeing the little homemade gadget run all around his creator's terrace, and bumping into his cat:

Press Release
SONY INTRODUCES THE WORLD’S FIRST CAMCORDER WITH SMILE SHUTTER TECHNOLOGY

SAN DIEGO, June 18, 2008 – Sony is taking the lead in the camcorder industry by introducing the first high-definition camcorder with both Smile Shutter™ and face detection technologies.

The HDR-CX12 Memory Stick® Handycam® camcorder can record full 1920 x 1080 HD video and 10-megapixel photos on Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media and any Memory Stick PRO Duo (Mark2) media cards. Roughly the size of a soda can (2.8-inches wide by 5.3-inches tall by 2.8-inches deep), this ultra-compact model will allow for easy transfer of video and stills from media cards to a compatible PC to share via email, uploading to the Internet or burning to disc.

With Sony’s unique Smile Shutter technology you can capture smiling photos and record video at the same time. When activated the technology will detect and automatically take a photo when your subject smiles - without having to switch to photo mode or press the photo button.

It also features child and adult prioritization so you can capture photos when your intended subject group smiles. This camcorder can even detect and capture a smile while in standby mode – just aim the camcorder and you’ll capture smiling moments.

“Advanced technologies such as ‘smile shutter’ make memory capture automatic so you can relax and enjoy the moment at hand,” said Kelly Davis, director of camcorder marketing at Sony Electronics. “Leveraging these key technologies across multiple product lines is another example of Sony’s commitment to anticipate consumer needs by making video capture more seamless, easy and fun.”

Advanced Features and Performance

In addition to face detection technology, the camcorder is packed with powerful features such as ClearVid® CMOS sensor with Exmor™-derived technology for stunning video detail and clarity, a BIONZ™ imaging processor, an advanced Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar® T* 12x optical zoom lens and Super SteadyShot® optical image stabilization for smooth video and clear photos.

The model has a 2.7-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus™ screen, Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel surround sound recording and a built-in zoom microphone to record clear dialogue. It has an assignable dial that can be customized to manually control focus, brightness and white balance.

The camcorder will ship with a supplied 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo (Mark2) media card so that you are ready to start recording almost straight out of the box. A supplied Handycam Station™ cradle makes for easy DVD creation with its One Touch Disc Burn button. Also bundled is Picture Motion Browser software to easily view, organize and store video and photos on a compatible PC.

Price and Availability

The HDR-CX12 camcorder will be in stores early August for about $900. It will be available at Sony Style® retail stores, online through www.sonystyle.com and at authorized dealers nationwide. Online pre-orders will begin on June 20th at www.sonystyle.com/handycam.

PMW-EX3 SONY EXPANDS CAPABILITIES OF XDCAM EX TECHNOLOGY

La nueva Sony PMW-EX3 Ya esta disponible
Puedes veerla en 3D

SONY EXPANDS CAPABILITIES OF XDCAM EX TECHNOLOGY
New camcorder, deck, professional hard-disk unit and
functionality upgrades deliver greater production capabilities
May 14, 2008, Toronto, Ontario – Sony of Canada Ltd., Canada’s leading electronic and
computer products solutions provider for consumers and business, announced the expanding
family of Sony’s XDCAM EX™ video production technology now includes new models that
increase the benefits of a solid-state workflow. These include the PMW-EX3 camcorder, the
PMW-EX30 deck, and the PHU-60K professional hard-disk unit.
Sony is also unveiling a prototype 32GB version of the SxS PRO™ solid-state memory card.
“These new products significantly upgrade solid-state production, while continuing the series’
heritage of ExpressCard technology – the new standard of PC card interface,” said Brian Young,
Marketing Manager, Acquisition Systems, Broadcast Communication Solutions Group, Sony of
Canada Ltd. “Now, users have access to an enhanced workflow and greater functionality, plus all
the benefits of the original XDCAM EX camcorder, including superb full HD 1920 by 1080
image quality without spatial offsetting.”
The PMW-EX3 camcorder features similar functionality to the PMW-EX1, but it allows users to
make lens choices depending on the nature of their project, through its interchangeable lens
system.
The PMW-EX3 camcorder features gen-lock and timecode in/out for multi-camera operation.
For use in a studio configuration, model RM-B150/B750 remote controllers will adjust basic
camera parameters such as gain, iris, white balance, pedestal, and gamma through the 8-pin
remote connector on the PMW-EX3 camcorder.

The PMW-EX30 model is Sony’s first solid-state memory recorder/player. The 1080i/720P
switchable unit has an HDMI digital connection for use with an external monitor. It has HD-SDI
in/out, making it ideal for recording live HD content, as well as dubbing to other formats. The
deck can also be used as an SxS PRO card reader/writer, and for feeding content to existing HD
and/or SD non-linear editing systems.
Specifically designed for use with XDCAM EX camcorders, the PHU-60K hard-disk unit is a
1.8-inch, 60 GB external storage unit with a USB 2.0 interface. Users can achieve approximate
recording times of 200 minutes in 35Mbps HQ (high-quality) mode and 260 minutes in 25Mbps
SP (standard play) mode.
When attached to a camcorder, the hard-disk unit functions just like an SxS PRO card, with
thumbnail views available on the LCD panel of the PMW-EX1 or PMW-EX3 camcorders or
PMW-EX30 deck.
Sony’s unique CyberCapture™ technology allows clips to be recorded at a stable transfer speed,
leading to fewer frame drops under challenging conditions such as extreme temperatures or
vibrations and shock.
A new “dumping” system is used to protect the HDD from a 1.5m drop, and buffer memory is
used to allow recording immediately after powering on. Also, a salvage function enables
restoration of content damaged by battery/cable disconnection or accidental powering down
during recording.
A 3-D G sensor and the buffer memory allow for stable recording. When the G sensor detects
that the unit is being dropped, the head of the HDD is immediately parked to protect the HDD.
The content is temporarily stored in the buffer memory and then restored in the HDD when it is
operating again. Approximately 12 hours of continuous operation are possible on a small size
BP-U30 battery.

32GB SxS PRO Memory Card
Sony plans to introduce a 32GB SxS PRO memory card later this year. One 32GB SxS PRO
memory card will record 100 minutes of full HD 1920 by 1080 video at 35Mbps, and 140
minutes of 1440 by1080 video at 25Mbps. Pricing will be announced at a later date.
Clip Browser Version 2.0
The Clip Browser software that ships with each XDCAM EX camcorder at no additional charge
is expected to be upgraded to version 2.0 this summer. Enhancements will include the capability
to use XDCAM EX content within a DV editing workflow.
Optional plug-in software separately under development for Clip Browser 2.0 will export
XDCAM EX files on SxS memory cards to Professional Media discs, allowing XDCAM HD
optical disc products to seamlessly interoperate with content shot by the XDCAM EX
camcorder.
Other optional plug-in software under development for Clip Browser 2.0 will enable XDCAM
EX files to be viewed on a range of portable consumer devices or to be uploaded to video sharing
web sites.
Non-linear editors can deliver higher-quality footage and accelerate the post production process
by editing XDCAM EX files natively. Major NLE vendors have solutions that support a true filebased
workflow with XDCAM EX files without the need for transcoding. Adobe is announcing
native support for XDCAM EX through its Adobe Premiere® Pro CS3 video editing and
production software. Also, this summer, Avid’s non-linear editing systems are expected to fully
support 35Mbps HQ (high quality) mode at 1920x1080/60i and 1280x720/60p.

iPhone, meet Lego...

Well, this certainly made me go get a glass of water. It was on Monday that i wrote about my new Lego Mindstorms NXT kit. I was quite excited about it (I haven't really got the chance to actually use it :'( )

So anyway, I was surfing the web, as I usually do, when I found this title on YouTube: iPhone Lego Mindstorms NXT Robot demo. One would have expected some type of funny video (you know what I think about YouTube: soooo many videos have soooo catchy and deceitful titles, I don't trust in YouTube anymore, nor it's users) So, I watched it... And the rest of it, I'll leave to your judgement:

So, how about that? Think the Swashbot's got a rival? Check out BattleBricks.com. It's filled with the alt world of Lego's NXT

2 jun 2008

My New Lego Mindstorms NXT!!!

I've always been a big fan of robots. When I was a small kid, I used to watch Transformers. Those were the good times.

Then, It kinda died. I still had that robot anxiety on my brain, but It was surpassed by digital cameras, and computer processors, faster printers, video converters, edition programs, videogames and music. But about 2 weeks ago, you may remember my post about those 3 little robots, Swashbot1, Swashbot2, and Swashbot3. That awakened my dormant inner engineer, and the little bugger started to bite me in the head, giving me a terrible itch. For the past few weeks I'd been thinking about robots and stuff. I even looked up even more robot videos in YouTube, but it was not enough. So I resigned myself to wait for the robotic itch to pass by, as did the model airplane itch, and the airsoft itch.

But today, my boss called me into his office. He didn't even bother calling me himself, he sent a colleague for me. I expected the worse. I began making excuses for not being able to finish the edition on time ("It won't render correctly" o perhaps "I don´t have the plug-ins. I'm downloading them right this moment") To my surprise, he pulled a box from under his desk: Read, it review, build something, take some pictures, and afterwards, you can keep it...

I took the box to my office....er, room, and opened the mystery package. I must admit, I expected a Sony Alpha 700, or something more normal.

The package containde a Lego Mindstorms NXT consumer version set. For many people, this must be a child's toy, but for me, it meant building my own little lego Swashbots... and that my friends, means a lot to a frustrated Han Solo like me...

The Mindstorms NXT is amazing. It has an Ultrasonic Sensor, a Sound sensor, touch sensor, and light sensor. The NXT (the brain of your soon-to-be robot) has Bluetooth capabilities and takes input from the aforementioned sensors through 4 RJ12 cords (Note: this may look similar to standard phone chords, but keep in mind, phone cords are RJ11 cords, which means it has 11, as opposed to the 12 wires in the RJ12. Quick and easy: phones and NXT don't mix!) It also features a nice 100x64 pixel LCD display (greyscale though; One'd guess they did spare on expenses). The NXT is fed by 6 AA batteries. I'd have preferred a rechargeable battery pack, probably Li-Ion, but that's included in the educational version (quoting Wayne Campbell: It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine!)

The kit includes a software where you can program your robot to do more complicated tasks than the ones programmable on the NXT's screen.

Up until now, I've only been able to make the servos move some wheels, basically, because I lack the time to do anything else. But soon I will post photographs of my ongoing project with my newest tech-toy.

Lesson 3.3 is almost here, also!!! Keep online!!
