Yahoo! to Showcase Internet Time Capsule in New Mexico

Yahoo! to Showcase Internet Time Capsule in New Mexico

Yahoo! will showcase select contributions from the Yahoo! Time Capsule on the canyon walls that cradle one of the world's oldest known communities at the ancient pueblo of Jemez in New Mexico. More than fifteen hours of pictures, videos, poems and stories from one of the largest Internet time capsules in history will be projected throughout the evenings of October 25-27 to chronicle humanity across the globe. The images will also be sent into space via a digital laser light beam from the canyon.

The stunning environmental media display at Jemez will salute the past, present and future of online and offline communities around the world. A simultaneous global web cast of the celebration will be available by searching on Yahoo! for "Time Capsule Celebration." Yahoo! is also hosting a parallel three-dimensional event in the popular Second Life virtual world, where participants can watch a stream of images from the real-world event and add their own contributions to a collaborative Second Life submission for the Yahoo! Time Capsule.

Music Wants to Spread Around The Zune Player iPOD War is ON

News "Why Microsoft's Zune scares Apple to the core,"

News Steve Jobs Newsweek interview.

Does the Zune is causing Steve Jobs nightmares throughout the night? Here are five reasons according to Mike Elgan from the Raw Feed:

Zune Players

1. Microsoft is hatching a consumer media “perfect storm.”

Zune will be supported and promoted and will leverage the collective power of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Soapbox (Microsoft’s new “YouTube killer”) and the Xbox 360. The Zune interface is just like a miniature version of the Windows Media Center user interface and is very similar to some elements of Vista.

The Zune will plug directly into the Xbox via a standard Universal Serial Bus cable — a fact Microsoft will drill into the heads of Xbox users on the Xbox Live online gaming service. The Zune Marketplace will be integrated with, and promoted by, the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Zune Players

2. The Zune is social and viral.

Since the iPod first came out, times have changed. The rise of social networks like MySpace.com and viral Web 2.0 sites like that of YouTube Inc. have transformed the expectations of young people about sharing and using media. In the context of these trends, Apple is old school. But the Zune, with its peer-to-peer wireless file sharing, is both social and viral. The Zune isn’t just a solitary music player. Think of it as a portable, wireless, hardware version of MySpace.

Zune Players

3. Zune may have more programming.

While Apple launched its movie business with movies from Disney (where Apple CEO Steve Jobs sits on the board), Microsoft has already lined up Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp., Paramount Pictuers, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros., Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. and MGM Pictures. For TV shows, Microsoft will offer programs from A&E, Animal Planet, the BBC, The Biography Channel, Cartoon Network, CBS, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, Discovery Health Channel, Discovery Kids, E Entertainment Television, Fine Living TV Network, Fox, Fuel TV, FX, HGTV, The History Channel, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, PBS, Speed, Spike, Travel Channel, TV Land, VH1 and others.

Zune Video

4. Zune’s screen is better for movies.

The Zune’s screen is just as good — and larger than the iPod’s. More importantly, it can be turned sideways for a wide-screen movie experience.

5. Zune is actually pretty cool.

The Zune is unlike any product Microsoft has ever shipped. It’s actually very nicely designed, surprisingly minimalist and (dare I say it?) “cool.”

The iPod is the soul of Apple’s entire business. Apple has been relatively successful at winning converts from Windows to Mac OS X, for example, in part because its whole product line basks in the glow of iPod’s success, hipness and ubiquity. Apple has recently and preemptively lowered the price of iPods, announced an iTV set-top box — which will ship later than Vista — and is probably working feverishly on a bigger-screen, wirelessly enabled iPod.

HVR V1U Camcorder - with hard-disk recording unit

SONY UNVEILS NEW HDV CAMCORDER WITH 24P CAPTURE FOR PROFESSIONAL VIDEOGRAPHERS
New Model Features Three ClearVid CMOS Sensor Technology; Complemented by 60 GB Hard-disk Recording Unit for Integration with NLE Systems

PARK RIDGE, N.J., Sept. 19, 2006 -- Sony is expanding its line-up of HDV™ products for professionals with the HVR-V1U HDV compact camcorder.

The new model delivers true 24P progressive scan capture, and uses three of Sony’s ClearVid CMOS Sensor™ chips combined with Sony's Enhanced Imaging Processor™ technology to provide greater sensitivity, higher resolution, lower noise and a wider dynamic range.

The professional camcorder enables simultaneous or “hybrid” recording to both an attachable hard-disk recording unit (model HVR-DR60), which is optional, and to the videotape used in the camcorder.

Together, the new camcorder and hard-disk recording unit join Sony’s comprehensive range of HDV production systems. By the end of this month, the company expects to have shipped about 91,000 units of professional HDV products worldwide, since introducing the format in January 2005.

“Our entire family of professional HDV products is based on the concept of offering options for customers,” said Bob Ott, vice president of marketing for Sony Electronics’ optical and network systems group. “This new camcorder and hard-disk recording unit deliver full production flexibility, and the HVR-V1U camcorder’s ability to capture true 24P images will appeal to any video professional desiring a ‘film-look’ for their work or for cinematographers working on tight budgets who still need high quality.”

Unlike "progressive-look" pictures interpolated from interlace scan camera systems, the HVR-V1U camcorder’s 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor system natively captures progressive images at 24P, 30P or 60P, while maintaining full 1080 HDV resolution. Footage shot using the progressive scan feature can be played back on any of Sony’s HDV professional camcorders and VTRs, and be easily edited with compatible non-linear editing systems.

The new ClearVid CMOS Sensor combined with Sony’s Enhanced Imaging Processor technology deliver higher sensitivity and higher resolution. According to Ott, the EIP technology achieves wide dynamic range through the use of a unique algorithm that separates image data into its texture patterns and brightness components. The technology allows the camera’s sensor to produce natural and rich tones for both light and dark areas of an image.

The EIP technology also enables the high-speed processing required for capturing high-definition video and still images at extremely high levels of gradation and image reproduction.

The combination of the ClearVid CMOS Sensor and the EIP technologies also result in a feature called “smooth slow rec. (recording).” Due to the speed of the camcorder’s signal processing, video images can be captured at very high speeds, up to 240 fields per second, allowing very fast movements to be recorded in precise detail without creating artifacts or signal degradation.

The new hard-disk recording unit is a 1.8-inch drive with a 60 GB capacity and offering up to 4.5 hours of recording time in either the HDV or DVCAM/DV mode. The unit features Smart Protection, which is combined with a built-in “shock absorber” that automatically protects it at a force of up to three Gs. When the sensor detects that the unit is being dropped, it immediately turns the power off and retracts the head to help prevent damage to the media.

The new hard-disk recording unit also has a cache recording, or buffer memory, function, allowing up to 14 seconds of video and audio signals to be continuously buffered in the memory while the camera is in stand-by mode. When the operator presses “record” that content is captured and then recording can continue in real time.

The camcorder features a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar® T* Lens with Extra-low Dispersion Glass and a 20x optical zoom lens with F2.8 at the telephoto end for greater light sensitivity and long-range image acquisition for maximum shooting flexibility.

A Digital Extender feature also enables the telephoto focal length to be extended by approximately 1.5 times to a maximum of 1100mm at 35mm conversion.

Additional features of the HVR-V1U camcorder include:

A timecode preset function
A TC Link to synchronize time codes
Two XLR microphone inputs for independent sound recording
A Camera Profile feature to adjust the camera settings of multiple cameras for multi-camera operations using MemoryStick Duo™ media
A 3.5-inch (viewable area, measured diagonally) Clear Photo LCD plus™ viewing screen

New accessories, which will be introduced later this year, include:

HVL-LBP LED battery video light, which is powered by Sony’s infoLITHIUM® "L" Series battery (NP-F970/F770)
VCL-HG0862K – a wide conversion lens (exclusive for the HVR-V1U) that features a “bayonet joint” for easy attachment
SH-L35WBP LCD Hood (exclusive to the HVR-V1U)

Professional Media Optimized for HDV Applications

Complementing the new devices is Sony’s highest-quality 6mm HDV videotape, DigitalMaster™, which the company recommends for professional HDV applications. These 63-minute cassettes (model PHDVM63DM) use Sony’s Advanced Metal Evaporated II Technology and its dual-active magnetic layers.

The advanced AME II manufacturing process employs Hyper Evaticle IV magnetic grains, improved lubricants, and a refined Diamond-Like Carbon layer. DigitalMaster tape exhibits greater packing density of magnetic grains, higher retentivity, higher output and lower noise. The result is a more robust tape with 65 percent fewer dropouts and 90 percent fewer errors.

The HVR-V1U camcorder and HVR-DR60 hard-disk recording unit are expected to be available in December at suggested list prices of $4,800 and $1,800, respectively.

El otro bellisimo comercial de Sony Bravia Bouncy Balls

To announce the arrival of the BRAVIA LCD and 3LCD range, Sony wanted to get across a simple message - that the colour you'll see on these screens will be 'like no other'.

Sending 250,000 multi-coloured 'superballs' bouncing down the streets of San Francisco may seem the strangest way to do this, but that's exactly what Danish director Nicolai Fuglsig did for the BRAVIA commercial in July this year. San Franciscans have seen some unusual things in their time, but even this gave them something to talk about. And we've got the feeling that this commercial is going to do exactly the same thing.

Plot Twists for Genre

In this story:
LIFE IMITATES ART A FAMILY AFFAIR A TIDY SUM SHAKY IN STATES

Telenovelas are addictive, and millions of Latinos are hooked. But even as these popular soap operas continue to win over viewers and advertisers, the genre's forays onto English-language networks in the U.S. and new spins on a traditional format raise questions about the future shape of novelas.

“If you give it a chance, the telenovela will take you and grab you. The person who has not been hooked by a telenovela has not really sat down to watch one,” said associate professor Carolina Acosta-Alzuru of the University of Georgia. “It is an impressively attractive genre.”

DESTINATION MEXICO COMMENTARY Protests, passion part of Mexican culture

Mexico, Protests, passion part of Mexican culture
- Maribeth Mellin, Special to The Chronicle
Sunday, October 1, 2006

The Associated Press recently reported that "growing political unrest and drug violence are making foreigners think twice about visiting Mexico. ... No tourists have been reported hurt in Mexico City, Oaxaca or Acapulco, but hotels are being hit by cancellations of thousands of reservations."

On Sept. 16, 2006, U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza spoke of the "near lawlessness of some parts of our border regions," and warned Americans to be extra cautious when traveling to border cities

Such reports from Mexico are unsettling, even for frequent travelers. Passion is palpable in the streets of Oaxaca, where teachers spent the summer sleeping in the central plaza beneath placards demanding better wages and social change. Many stayed even after school started. In Mexico City, angry voters protesting the results of Mexico's presidential election set up camp beneath the wide-winged golden angel monument on the Paseo Reforma and the massive flag in the Zócalo.

...Mexico is an enormous country, just like the United States. Serial murderers stalking children in Phoenix don't keep tourists away from Disneyland. Barricades in Oaxaca won't stop cruise ships from sailing into peaceful harbors in Cozumel.

Tourism is the third-largest industry in Mexico. You can be sure the government will do all it can to keep travelers safe and secure.

CANON RELEASES NEW HD 6X ZOOM XL 3.4-20.4mm L LENS FOR XL H1 HD CAMCORDER

CANON RELEASES NEW HD 6X ZOOM XL 3.4-20.4mm L LENS FOR XL H1 HD CAMCORDER
XL H1 HD CAMCORDER

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., July 26, 2006 – Providing cinematographers, broadcasters and video industry professionals with a growing range of acquisition solutions, Canon has expanded its array of HD optics for the XL H1 HD camcorder with a new 6X wide angle HD zoom lens. Building upon an already growing system of accessories, the Canon HD Video Lens 6X Zoom XL 3.4-20.4mm L lens gives XL H1 HD camcorder users greater creative control in a variety of shooting conditions. Available in November, the lens will carry an estimated selling price of $2,999*.

As a world-renowned manufacturer of optics for broadcast and professional photographic solutions, Canon reserves the "L-series" designation (denoted by a red-stripe around the lens) for its highest quality photographic lenses. The 6X XL Wide 3.4 - 20.4mm L-series zoom lens features UA (Ultra High Refractive Index Aspherical) glass elements to produce high-quality HD images with low distortion. All lens elements are treated with a multi-coating to reduce flare and ghosting

The new wide-angle lens provides users with an extensive range of focal lengths from 24.5 to 147mm (in 35mm photographic terms) that would otherwise not be possible with a fixed lens, giving shooters the versatility of a zoom and the creativity of a wide-angle lens. To take that a step further, the lens features a manual iris ring (maximum aperture of f/1.6 - 2.6) and a distance display function to aid focus, so users can more accurately control the exposure and feel of their shot.

The lens allows users to switch between two Neutral Density filters (1/6, 1/32) for best performance in bright lighting conditions. The lens includes a Minimum Object Distance (MOD) feature, which creates a AF range suitable for normal shooting situations from one meter to infinity. This feature prevents the lens from focusing on dust particles that can occasionally appear on the surface of the lens. For macro applications, the AF range can be extended to a minimum focusing distance of 20mm. Canon also built focus and zoom presets into the lens for ease-of-use when shooting.

Blog proviene de Web Log
A weblog.

intr.v., blogged, blog·ging, blogs.
To write entries in, add material to, or maintain a weblog.

A website that displays in chronological order the postings by one or more individuals and usually has links to comments on specific postings.

HMD Head Mount Display The future for personal Video

The new personal video display technnologies are made for high growth digital consumer electronics. An Israeli Firm Mirage Innovations is at the forefront of this new technology
Mirage says its NanoPrism technology will alter the price/performance of personal displays while solving the problems plaguing traditional personal displays, which include unacceptably large weight and form factor.

The company's technology is based on the principle of transforming a thin transparent plate into a complete wearable personal display system. The diffractive planar optics is combined with a microdisplay source, such as micro LCD, LCOS or OLED, to provide the users with a color video image equivalent to a 40-in. screen viewed from a distance of 7 feet.

New domains registered by Google may indicate the company is a step closer to offering its AdWords clients the opportunity to place advertisements on television programs. We're going to suggest the first network that will try them on its channel.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has discussed his distaste for untargeted advertising in other places. Recently, he expounded about the topic during his chat with Danny Sullivan at SES 2006 in San Jose:

Mexico to Yahoo: Not on our pyramid!

According to Reuters
Yahoo Inc. said on Wednesday it dropped plans to use Mexico's Teotihuacan archaeological site for its much-hyped "time capsule" project after authorities fearing damage to the ancient ruins denied them permission.

Digg!

The largest live interactive global media event in history for the Yahoo! brand.

Yahoo has created the Yahoo Time Capsule, the “first-ever electronic anthropology project” to document human life in 2006.

Yahoo, on Tuesday 10 began collecting text, images, audio, video and photo submissions from interested parties to be included with a message that will be digitized and beamed into space as part of the company’s “Time Capsule” effort to communicate with alien life,

The submissions are supposed to provide an accurate portrayal of human life, and they are to be beamed into the heavens on Oct. 25 via laser after being digitized, according to Reuters.

The Mexican Pyramid of the Sun at the Teotihuacan archaeological site outside Mexico City will serve as a “launch pad” for the digital information capsule

In addition to the data being shot into space, some chosen submissions will be projected onto the side of the 216-foot-tall pyramid for spectators and other Web surfers to view via a real-time, global Web broadcast,

With YouTube, Google puts its competitors in a jam

With YouTube, Google puts its competitors in a jam
Build off what they have, or buy a second-tier site? For Microsoft and Yahoo, there's no easy way to make the Internet video market a horse race.

With its planned $1.65 billion acquisition of the video sharing Web site YouTube, Google may well have its big Internet search competitors in a jam.

Video from YouTube Founders

YouTube has a 45 percent share of the online video market, which is more than its top four competitors combined, according to market trackers at Hitwise. It has mainstream cachet, as page one stories about the impending Google deal in both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal aptly demonstrated. And, not even two years old, it has a start-up momentum unheard of in any Internet company not named Google.

Google buys Youtube video internet company for $1.65 Billion dollars

Google has snapped up YouTube for $1.65 billion in a deal that catapults the Internet search leader to a leading role in the online video revolution.
The all-stock acquisition unites one of the Internet's marquee companies with one of its rapidly rising stars.

The price makes YouTube, a still-unprofitable startup, by far the most expensive purchase made by Google during its eight-year history.

Although some cynics have questioned YouTube's staying power, Google is betting that the popular Web site will provide it an increasingly lucrative marketing hub as more viewers and advertisers migrate from television to the Internet.

"We are natural partners to offer a compelling media entertainment service to users, content owners and advertisers," said Eric Schmidt, Google's chief executive officer.

SONY UNVEILS NEW HDV CAMCORDER WITH 24P CAPTURE FOR PROFESSIONAL VIDEOGRAPHERS
